Teito Klein is a former slave sent to attend the Barsburg Empire's military academy due to his ability to use Zaiphon, a type of supernatural power. The ability is rare, and thus highly prized. Teito is an amnesiac and doesn't remember anything of his origins—what he does learn of his past comes from his recurring and often traumatizing dreams.After a year at the academy, Teito takes the graduation exam; it is notoriously difficult, with a pass rate of one in twenty-five. Teito and his best (and only) friend, Mikage, pass easily. That night, in their shared dorm room, they each promise to help the other at any cost. The next day, Teito is delivering papers to a professor when he overhears his name. He stops to listen and realizes that the speaker, a man named Ayanami, is the man who killed his father in his dreams. Teito is found eavesdropping and tries to attack his father's murderer, but is quickly brought down by one of Ayanami's subordinates and sent to prison. Mikage comes to help him escape, only to find that Teito has managed to fight past the guards by himself. The two flee the building, but are cornered on a balcony. Teito pretends to hold Mikage hostage, threatening to kill him; and tries to escape when Ayanami sends a Zaiphon attack after him, which Teito manages to partly deflect. A Bishop in the nearby 7th District brings the injured Teito to the church to recuperate. Since Teito is still in chains, the Bishop, Frau, mistakes him for a slave and comments that if Teito had been a soldier in the Imperial army, he would have killed him immediately. Because of the law of "sanctuary", Teito may stay in the church without fear of the Empire or Ayanami.Teito carries the Eye of Michael, the powerful artifact that his home country, the Raggs Kingdom, was ransacked for. The tragic death of a loved one catapults him into his quest for revenge against the Barsburg Empire and knowledge about his past, while he becomes entangled with the Gods, Verloren, and the 7 Ghosts.His best friend's fate spurs Teito into trying to master the Bascule—a powerful weapon that can harness and focus his innate power. Friends become enemies and rivals become allies as Teito begins to fulfill his destiny, and protect his fallen country from the minions of his former masters...
EPISODE - 001: "The Future of Painful Thoughts is"
Teito Klein is a young student at the Barsburg Military Academy living with his best friend Mikage. They are close and have the strong desire to pass their final exams using their abilites, the Zaiphon. On the day of the final exam- that is, the test that one must pass in order to become a full officer of the Barsburg military, both Teito and Mikage manage to succeed. After passing however, Teito stumbles upon a dark secret pertaining to his hidden and mysterious past (which he is unable to remember) and attempts to escape from the Academy...

EPISODE - 002: "Nostalgic Memories Accompany Pain"
Teito begins to fall from his hawkzile, his injuries severe to the point where he has become unconscious. As he falls, one of the men riding, named Frau, carries him back to the Church. Teito wakes up, and perceiving the three men as his enemies, attempts to escape, only to be brought back into the church again. The three men introduce themselves as Frau, Castor, and Labrador- all bishops of the Church, which lies in the 7th District of the Barsburg empire. They tell Teito that while he is in the Church he cannot be harmed by the government itself as the Church lies outside of Barsburg government's boundaries...

EPISODE - 003: "My Innocent Child, Sleep Within The Light"
Teito decides to leave the Church and help Mikage. Along the way, he is prodded by nurses for his well being. The Bishops and nurses have a feast and there is a slightly humorous scene in which Mikage is exposed to the delicacies of the Church: eyefish and edible plants. Mikage then stumbles upon an old man who tells him that if he wishes to have his wish granted, he must come to the courtyard at midnight when the bells toll. Mikage then decides to run off by himself, hating the fact that he might be a burden to the Church at the moment...

EPISODE - 004: "To the Depths of the Earnest Prayer"
Teito begins to talk with the old man, talking about how badly he wishes to see Mikage. The old man then says "He will grant your wish", placing an odd symbol on Teito's neck while Teito has a vision of running toward Mikage. Just as he is about to reach his hand, the flower that Castor gave him from before stops him in his tracks, and he realizes that the Bishops are there in front of him. Frau demands that Teito shouldn't give into the darkness, and grows a scythe from his hand and begins to attack the old man, who turns out to be a "Kor". The Bishops fight the man, and while Teito wants to help, Castor tells him that he is unable to use Zaiphon as he would only hurt the old man's soul...
